Meet the Staff

All staff members at New England Montessori School are certified in First Aid and CPR.

Katie Gilman

Katie is the sole proprietor of New England Montessori School. She has been working in the school since its opening in October of 2001. She graduated from Champlain College with an Associates Degree in Early Childhood Education and a Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education. Throughout her experience at Champlain, Katie worked as a student teacher in preschool, Kindergarten, First Grade and Second Grade classrooms. In 2003, she received a Graduate level Montessori Credential from North American Montessori Center, British Columbia. For five years Katie had implemented and taught a multi-age classroom at NEMS. She is now Director of Admissions and Owner of NEMS.

Alesa Smith

Alesa Smith is the Lead Teacher in room 106. She graduated from North American Montessori Center in British Columbia. She has her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Art Education from Mass College of Art, and her Associate Degree in Illustration from Northern Essex Community College. She has additional Montessori training through Northeast Montessori Institute. Alesa has been working with preschoolers and special needs children in a variety of settings since 1985. For over 10 years, Alesa and her mother have operated a Non-Profit After School and Outreach Program in Lawrence, MA, for children ages 2 through 12. Alesa will begin her tenth year at NEMS in the fall of 2011.

Carol Livingston

Carol Livingston is the Assistant Teacher in room 106. Carol is married and has two children. Carol received her Montessori Assistant Teacher Training through Northeast Montessori Institute in 2005. Carol worked at Sacred Heart School in Lawrence, MA as an assistant, as well as a substitute in all grade levels (preK-grade 8). Carol has participated in numerous trainings in all areas of child development and has also assisted the summer camp programs here at NEMS for the past three summers. Carol will begin her eighth year at NEMS in the fall of 2011.

Kim Hegarty

Kim Hegarty is the Director of NEMS. Kim began working with children 26 years ago, becoming teacher certified in her 2nd year of college. She graduated from Salem State College in 1988 with a Bachelors Degree in Sports and Fitness. She continued her education at North Shore Community College taking various Early Childhood Education courses until she became Director 11 qualified. In 2003, Kim received her Montessori credentials from North American Montessori Center. Kim's teaching experience includes working with children ages 1-14 since 1983, as well as extensive administrative experience as a Preschool Director. Kim has also coached field hockey at Endicott and Salem State Colleges. Kim will begin her ninth year at NEMS in the fall of 2011.

Christine Downey

Christine Downey is a Lead Teacher at New England Montessori School. She began teaching here in September of 2012. Christine has her Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education and her Masters Degree in Reading, both from Salem State University. Christine has received training from the NorthEast Montessori Institute as well. Christine is married and has four daughters.

Melissa Savoie

Melissa Savoie is Lead Teacher in room 104. Melissa received her Bachelor of Arts in 2005 at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst and has graduated with her Montessori Credential through North American Montessori Teacher Training. From June of 2006-2007, she worked at South Bay Early Intervention in Lowell, MA. She worked in a classroom with children who had developmental delays, gaining a rewarding, educational and inspirational experience which led her to pursue her desire to educate the youth. Melissa has also implemented a yoga program at NEMS for the past two years. Melissa will begin her fifth year at NEMS in the fall of 2011.

Marcia Lambert

Marcia Lambert is the Assistant Teacher in room 104. Marcia has and Associates Degree in Dental Lab Technology. She has had five years experience has a teacher's assistant, one of those years being a kindergarten assistant at Sacred Heart School. While at Sacred Heart, Marcia was the Director of the Early Morning Program for 2 years. Marcia received her Montessori Assistant Teacher Training through Northeast Montessori Institute in 2005. Marcia will begin her eighth year at NEMS in the fall of 2011.

Rosalee Scozzari

Rosalee Scozzari is a Lead Teacher at NEMS. Rosalee received her Bachelor Degree in Early Childhood Education from Regis College in 1993. Rosalee received her teaching certification during her freshman year in college and taught for 8 years. She took a leave of absence from teaching to stay at home for her three children. While on hiatus from teaching, she remained active in her children's education, running many school activities and chairing committees. With her children all in school, Rosalee returned to teaching. As of September 2011, Rosalee will be entering her second year of teaching at NEMS.

Binali Madani

Binali Madani is an Assistant Teacher at NEMS. Binali received her Bachelor Degree in Psychology from Xavier's College in India and has an Montessori Associate Degree from the North American Montessori Center. She is married and has two children ages 16 and 14. Binali has volunteered and substituted at NEMS for the past four years and has been a part of the teaching team since April 2011. Binali has also volunteered assisting visually impaired individuals while living in India. Her hobbies include making crafts and the love of music.

Suzanne Campano

Suzanne Campano is a teacher in Room 104 and is the newest member of our teaching team at NEMS. She began working in December of 2013. Suzanne received her B.S. in Elementary Education from Salem State University in 1994 and worked at the Bagnall Elementary School since 1994. She was a 1st Grade teacher, a substitute for grades 1st, 3rd and 5th, and an instructional tutor as well. Suzanne is married and has two beautiful girls!
